Chiang Rai is a city in northern Thailand, in the hilly territory of a similar name. The city is close to the outskirts of Laos and Myanmar (some time ago Burma). Wat Phra Kaew is an imperial sanctuary that once housed the jade Emerald Buddha and now shows an imitation. Close by, the Navel City Pillar is a landmark made of in excess of 100 Khmer-style Pillar. Mae Fah Luang Craftsmanship and Social Park is a gallery displaying Lanna ancient artefacts.

North East of Chiang Rai close to Chiang Saen lies the infamous Golden Triangle, once the center of opium production and trade in South East Asia. Those days are gone. Now the area is peaceful and tranquil dotted with hill tribe villages, ancient temples and markets.
The Golden Triangle locally known as Sop Ruak is where Thailand, Burma and Laos meet separated by the Mekong river. The border between Thailand and Burma is marked by the Ruak river, which flows into the Mekong at Sop Ruak.
Golden Triangle Park
On the Thai side of the river where all three countries can be seen from the viewpoint is the Golden Triangle Park. An entrance gate adorned with sculpted elephant statues welcomes visitors to the Golden Triangle.
On the banks of the Mekong river is a large golden Buddha image seated in a boat. Next to it are two large elephant statues carrying miniature stupas on their backs.
